Full Version: Embedded Audio in Web Pages

I really a while ago that some online radio stations were able to embed streaming audio using just HTML and Javascript, no plugins. The college radio station that I am a part of requires streaming audio to be embedded into a web page for simplicity reasons. I am curious if anyone can explain to me how this is done because I would love to be able to move from Windows Media to a better cross-platform audio format for streaming audio. I would love it if I could offer OGG streams instead or even better, multiple formats.

Using HTML without some ungodly complex javascript it is not possible. You would have to code a decoder in pure javascript and have it pipe the decoded sound to your card. Javascrip was simply never ment for that. Java OTOH can. And nifty enough it is rather cross platform. Perhaps you could look at J-Roar IIRC. It should be able to handle Icecas2 streams and even Peercast ones.

PeerCast is developing an ActiveX client, which would allow for streaming right from a webpage. It also supports Ogg Vorbis streaming.

However, the PeerCast is still in pre-1.0 stage, so you might have to wait a bit for it to be reliable. Though I'm sure your college campus will appreciate the lack of cost & the low bandwidth use, if you do decide to use PeerCast. wink.gif
