Full Version: How good is sv5?

I found some mpc files on my hdd that according to the plugin were encoded with sv5 and the bitrate is rather low (~135 kbps). A quick listen didn't reveal any obvious flaws. How much better is sv7 and was it normal for sv5 to generate files of such a low bitrate?
Mr. Mulder
Same doubt here, I'm curious too, but about sv4. As an example I have Eagle's Hotel California, and the Winamp plugin 0.90i indicates:
Streamversion 4, Profile: n.a.
Bitrate: VBR 128.6 kbps

The psy model was the same in this "early" versions?

Sounds better than a couple 192 Kbps Xing & Blade MP3 encodes I have of the same song anyway, I think.wink.gif

If it sounds good and doesn't exhibit any annoying artifacts then the answer would be "good enough." My understanding is that there have only been psych model tweaks to fix problematic audio situations and if your songs don't hit any of those issues, you should be good to go. If you have a copy of the original disc I see no reason not to redo them with a newer stream format, but like Mulder said, it generally sounds better than MP3 at any stream version. If it sounds good to you I wouldn't worry.

I found this, posted by the man himself, buschel:
QUOTE
SV5 encoders are totally different of SV7-encoders... the psychoacoustic model of SV7-encoders is much better tuned for high quality [...] but SV5 won't create transparent results!

But I will follow gdougherty words and not worry smile.gif

hi,

as you can imagine i own sv4,5,6 and 7 files. as long as i cannot get the CD or the same song in sv7 i'll still listen to my sv4 tracks without any pain wink.gif these old versions were quite satisfying for listening-only (not archiving) purposes. also, you'll never know which parameter set (now "profile") was used for encoding.
there were so many changes in between 4-7... i cannot remember all... but there were some changes which lead to a more stable quality and fixed problems with transients, low amplitude signals, harmonics, stereo-image. the effect is that the overall bitrate is much higher comparing sv4/5 to sv7 files. on most (uncritical) signals i guess the audible difference is present, but not annoying (mostly the older files sound a bit more "muffled" or "noisy" -- especially via headphones).
so, i would recommend not to re-encode if you only listen to the music for entertainment, but re-encode the tracks if you aim towards archiving...
