A great opportunity to support the campaign for the inclusion of animal rights in the european constitution...sign this petition and show that you care.

I'm not sure that animal rights belong in a constitution. There should certainly be laws for protecting animals, but in the constitution? I mean, animals aren't even governed by the government. You can't arrest a dog for pooping on a stranger's lawn. Your kitty cat can't testify in court. You can't tell a bear to stop mauling people. If the other constitutional laws don't apply to them, why synthesize a constitutional clause that does?

The constitution (in the U.S., at least) is a minimalist document that only ensures basic legislative powers and fundamental human rights. Although I would like nothing more than to see a law forcing people to take care of the environment and all the plants and animals that live on the earth, I know that you can't effectively legislate morality. No amount of cute puppy-dog eyes will convince me that a constitutional amendment for animal protection makes sense. Well, maybe a hundred puppies will.
