How do I find the details of images embedded in MP3 files?

Hi, I would like to know how to get the details of any images embedded in my MP3 files.  Are the images actually part of the ID3 tags, or some other form of metadata?

I am currently going through all my albums sorting out the artwork - some of the artwork is from iTunes and so is only displayed in iTunes or on my iPod due to the fact that the images are stored in .itc files in a local folder, rather than embedded into each MP3 file.  Some of the artwork is already properly embedded, but I would like to see the file format, file size, and resolution of the image - how can I do this?

Many thanks
Tom

AudioShell can tell you information about the mp3 files, and it allows you to see what album art is embedded (if any).  It won't explicitly tell you the filesize, etc. but you can "Save As" the image and get the properties you seek that way.
foobar2000, FLAC, and qAAC -V90
It just works people!

mp3tag will do what you want for the embedded art.

I thought I enabled email notification for replies, but obviously not!

Thank you both for your replies - the MP3tag feature is exactly what I need, I didn't realise it displayed such information.

I was going to edit the above post but I can't see how to do it.

Anyway, I have another question:-
To get iPods to display albums in chronological order instead of alphabetical order, you must assign a "Sort Album" tag field in iTunes.  This field is apparently supported by MP3tag as "ALBUMSORTORDER".  How do I use the year in the album folder name to add an ALBUMSORTORDER tag? (e.g. for the folder "Coldplay - 2002 - A Rush Of Blood To The Head" how do I use the "2002" for the ALBUMSORTORDER?
Thanks
Tom

Are you sure there isn't a easier way?  I don't use iTunes, but in Winamp, I can simply click on the "Year" column, and the sort-order changes to year.  (In this case, it's the song-year, not the album-year.)

I've never used ALBUMSORTORDER either, But I assume you can simply type-in the year (in MP3Tag).  Then when you choose "sort by album", it should use the data in that field, rather than the data in the album field.  (That assumes that iTunes will actually use that tag instead of the actual album tag...  I dunno...)

The information in the tags is not necessarily related to the file/folder names.

Thanks for your reply DVDdoug.
Yes, you can easily display albums in order of release date by sorting by either "Year" or "Album by Year", but this does not transfer the ORDER to the actual iPod.  In fact, I don't think you can even view the year of a song or album on an iPod Touch (if you know how to, please let me know).

Anyway, after some messing around, I can confirm that there IS an "albumsortorder" field in MP3tag, and it DOES correspond to the "Sort Album" field in iTunes, which also transfers this information to your iPod.  In MP3tag, "albumsortorder" is an extended field and you can convert part of a file or folder name to this tag simply by using "%albumsortorder%", which is nice!  So, if it bugs you that your long discographies play in the wrong order then this is a handy solution.  There may be a way to copy one tag field to another tag field (i.e. "Year" tag to "Albumsortorder" tag without using a file/folder name) but I haven't found it yet!

  • Select a file
  • go to Convert -> Actions
  • In the Action Groups window, click "New" button
  • Type a name for the action, click OK
  • In the Actions window,  click "New" button
  • Select Format value from the drop-down list, click OK
  • Select ALBUMSORTORDER from the Field drop-down list
  • for Format string:, click the arrow button [>] and select year from the list, click OK
  • Click OK in the Actions window,
then in the Action Groups window click OK to apply selected actions to selected files,
or click Cancel to wait to use the action later.
After-wards, this new action can then be accessed by the "Actions" button - [Aa] - on the toolbar.
