What's kind of music are you going to listen?
In this price range, you may order the Sharp HP-MD33S, these four pole heaphones sound better than the EX71.

They may be good phones' but four plug phones do not work well with normal stereo outs.  For the four' plugs you need the sharp only MD models that feature the auvi amp.  Without them, sound comes from only one channel or in mono.  Good idea though mate

I got my Creative EP630's last week and I couldn't be more pleased with them. Incredible isolation which might be a tad dangerous when out and about but there you go.

As with any canalphones it takes a little time to get them inserted correctly so you don't want to be in a situation where you'll need to keep putting them in and out but once you hit the sweet spot the sound is nicely balanced with a full bottom end which is very important to me.

The cables are very rubbery which definitely prevents them from becoming as easily tangled as other buds I've owned.

Another vote for the EP-630's. Great sound and they isolate very well! It also seems that they are much more durable than the Sony EX series.

These ear phones will come with a converter to transfer it from 4 to 3, and these phones will work well with normal stereo outs. Sound quaility is still very good for the price!

My Sony EX-51's broke  Well, they didn't exactly break, but the rubber cord on the neckchain part seemed to have degraded (probably from sweat?) and it stripped off easily.  They aren't nearly as durable as my previous Sony fontopia's, where the neckchain was made of thick an durable plastic.

Now I've bought a pair of Sennheiser MX500's.  I miss the bass but it looks a little more durable than the EX51s.

QuantomKnot: that's the same thing that happened to my EX71s.  I have since upgraded to Shure E3s after doing a little saving but that really set me back from getting another pair of Sony canalphones

Missing the bass of EX51! Why don't get a pair of Philips SHE9500 In-Ear Headphones? Those new philips are very good for the money!

I bought some cheap Sony MDR-101, open type, for 7 €, and they sound pretty well for the price. Certainly better than typical cheap in-ear headphones, and quite comfortable too.

I did see a pair of those for sale.  They were cheaper than my EX51s.  But that neckchain looked like the same rubbery stuff that's used in the EX51s, hence I turned them down, for durability reasons.  The way that rubber just degraded (melted) in my hands, stripping the wire bare, just made turn away from it.

a note about the sharp hp-md33s--they ARE great, and i found that if i used the enclosed extension cable they worked fine--i think the cable converts the bi-amplification to 2-channel instead of 4.

Is the 4-channel thing a real issue. I just ordered a pair of these and knew nothing about it.

Many stereo jacks will not work properly with the 4 pole plug.  You can use the extension cable or you can mod the plug with a solder bridge.  However, I did find that the Shuffle jack contacts the plug exactly between the two ground bands which causes the sound to cut out.

The new Sennheiser CX300s are almost identical to the MD33s and the Creative EP630s except they are sold in the USA at local retailers.  Amazon had them last week for $39.99 shipped.  That is cheaper than Audiocubes and the MD33s.  The CX300s come with a one meter cord and a standard stereo right angle plug and a two year warranty.  I presume that the warranty implies that the cord material is longer lasting than that of the MD33s or EX71s.

I'm happy to report that...lol...I accidentally left my MX400's in my pants pocket...they were washed and dried...and the MX400's are still working fine.

Anybody else out there finding something even better than the MX400's?

just noticed that sony have a pair of new phones: MDR-EX85LP. The phones is under 50 bucks but look similar to the EX90. Most important, the phones also feature a large 13.5mm drive. Seem the new EX85s are very promising.

I have them. They're sounding good and thus are very good candidates for using as ear canal phones.
To me they are one of the best choices when needing total acoustical isolation.

When not needing total acoustical isolation, I'd prefer the sound of big drivers, and use a phone like Koss KSC-75 which IMO sound great and are still relatively small (no head or neck band), and are also very comfortable to use. They're also very cheap. Absolutely great sounding phones for any kind of pop music.

Depends on where you will be listening and comfort and sound requirements.

My two "pocket" pair were both under $30...

I'm not fond of earbuds but got Cerulean XLRs to replace the aweful standard iPod buds. The XLRs sound good even wearing Griffin Ear Jams.

My MD (+iPod) preference are Philips SCB HS303. No jams and sound terrific. They come in colors now but are getting harder to find. They are very comfortable, especially for long periods.

How is the bass with the Sennheiser CX300 vs the Koss KSC-75?

It's very good with both of them, maybe the cx300 bass is more impressive. However the sound impression of them two is different, and to me the Koss are sounding a bit more natural in the overall sight, with all frquencies having pretty much equal weight.

I haven't tried the Koss', but I own a set of the CX300's and I absolutely LOVE them!
Solid bass. Good isolation.
And they ate the Shure E4C's for breakfast, in my opinion.
While the Shure's gave slightly better isolation, they had almost NO bass presence, where the CX300's give good bottom end.
I also found more "cable noise" with the E4C's. There is a little bit with the CX300's, but not enough to distract you.
Cheers,
Bruce.

Here's another EX-51 lover, with the same sound happiness and the same material problems. I currently own my fourth pair of earplugs because the neckchain cable of the right plug always kind of disintegrated, which is in fact due to sweat.

In order to prevent it from melting the fourth time, I put about 15 cm of cable into the small plastic holder provided along with the plugs (two rounds of cable, to be precise) and wear them in front of instead of around the neck. No sign of melting for 9 months now.
Nothing is impossible if you don't need to do it yourself.

oh wow, i was bored and checking the posts i made here and found this one.

if anyone noticed, the last time i checked/posted was somewhere around august 18th 2004.

i went with mx500's which eventually got stepped on by a drunk girl, but they served me well.

then i got broken KSC-75's from a friend, sent them in, and got brand new ones.  i was in awe of the bumpin bass and clear highs.  eventually i saw someone using some cool looking etymotic er6i's and he let me borrow them for a while.  i was absolutely amazed at the isolation.  i thought they were really cool and heard about its nearest competitor the shure e2c's.  i got osme of those, did the kramer mod from head-fi, got e4c's, got e500's, and am very very eagerly waiting for my sennheiser hd-25-1 and hd650 cable to use with it, along with a 1/8" mini plug and soldering iron to have some fun.

now looking at building an alien DAC, and either a SOHA amp or CK-K3 amp.

along the way i had gone through a TON of mp3 players(some lost, died, stolen, crushed by a weight)

funny to see my first post about headphones from a new highschool graduate to a senior in college now with a passion for headphones.  crap sony to mx500 to iems.  i wonder how it would've been different if i read that later post about ksc75's or grados or sennheiser px100 which all seem to pretty much outdo the mx500s.  maybe i would've gotten into full sized cans earlier.  only a couple years after this thread in college did i start getting into IEMs and the college-fi like.

edit: now i have dt880s and want stax.  crap.
