I have to admit that I finally begin to like this UI, especially now that there are some decent looking toolbar icons - I certainly won't miss the old ones.
However, there are some issues that will keep me from using it right now (despite the fact that the standard UI has got hold of my mind):
  • Keyboard presses from child windows (dialogs) are sent to the core and interpreted as hotkeys, which is a major source of annoyance when typing text. This does not always happen right from the start, but once it has started it doesn't seem to go away.
  • Popping up the context menu with the keyboard works only in the explorer view. Showing the context menu in response to WM_CONTEXTMENU instead of WM_RBUTTONDOWN should remedy that.
  • The window title flickers (on WinXP). Suggestion: only set the window caption, if the text has really changed.
  • You should strip color codes from the status bar string using titleformat::remove_color_marks() in case the user does not want to change the status bar format when switching the user interface.
  • It should be possible to disable toolbar icons that correspond to commands that are not available, for example when the playlist hopper plugin is not installed.
  • Drag-select does not work in the playlist view.

i second foosion's suggestions, plus:

1) i've been getting some additional menu entries since the first version, you can see them underlined in this screenshot. two plugins, foo_bookmark and foo_osd are having problems atm. could you look at it?

2) i would like some way to make playing item even more visible. could you possibly change columns' colors for playing item? (increase brightness or blend it with white)

3) alignment for columns. even use $tab() / $char(9) or add checkbox / listbox to select alignment (left / right / centered)

4) i would like to have some additional tag guessing / correcting / formatting code common for every column and then only output variables with pre-formatted values. you could do that easily by adding 'common code' editbox, and internally store that string concatenated with display strings for each and every column, separated using special separator (newline, for example - not sure that it won't get filtered out). then, when displaying lines, you would simply use that string, split it using the separator and map resulting strings to columns using columns order

5) playlist displaying could get faster. are you doing off-screen rendering / buffering etc?

6) maybe some way for formatting string to modify column colors (not really setting new colors, just modifying brightness / saturation would do). we could use this to differentiate first track in album, track with too long filename / low bitrate etc.

all in all, i like progress of this gui, it's getting quite useful!

This is really nice!

My suggestions:
1) Use Tahoma in preferences/ui - most parts of foobar2000 components do, so it would look more consistent that way.
2) Speaking of color codes - I would personally like more if you allowed user to use them (as in default UI), rather then removing it (as foosion suggests).

Wow, this is vastly improved over the last time I tried it... here's some more suggestions:

-Add the ability to lock the toolbars, and if possible set them so they push each other around when you move them? I have this same annoyance with the quick launch bar, it doesn't make any sense to hide certain buttons when there's plenty of space for all of them, all I want to do is insert a toolbar without having to resize everything else.

-Capitalize "Playlist" and "Explorer", it'll look better

-Double clicking on status bar should select currently playing file, right now there's no way to check easily. In addition, it'd be nice if the status bar supported color/font styles like the default UI.

-Updates on song change is a bit less than instantaneous, might be something worth looking into

-Is there any way that we can our hotkeys back? I don't see any reason for its current behavior, and having my hotkeys would be ever so useful. Plus, it's kinda wonky right now, pressing any key on the keyboard (except arrows) selects the first item in the playlist for some reason.

-The tag boxes in the left-hand column don't adjust with the width of the column

Great UI!

I have a suggestion for a new view: The database explorer view.
It will look almost like the windows explorer view but explores the
database instead. On way to design it could be having a split artist
and album view on the left and a song display up to the right.
The user can then click on artist, then album and find the song(s)
in the song list.

can there be an option to switch explorer view with foobar's album list? that's more effective than explorer for me.

is there any way to get the bullet back in front of the currently playing song like there used to be?

that would be cool

foo_tunes

also is there any chance you can add the same functionality of double clicking status bar highlights and scrolls to currently playing song (like in the default ui) or something similar (maybe double clicking somewhere else).

that would be great.

Tell me about it. Wow :O

Small issue which may not be too obvious is that the playlist is highlighted by default (rather than something more useful like the playlist) when foobar is re-focused (focus another window > focus foobar again). Another issue is that files passed to the context menu are frequently wrong ('right-click track > show file info' may or may not be the track you clicked--using foobar 0.8 beta 8). Also, any chance on splitting the playback toolbar into smaller groups? (particularily the Previous album, Next album, etc. buttons)

Edit: 'Show selected time of selected tracks' in the status bar (as well as volume-- very hard to figure out current volume at a glance with that little vertical green progress bar) like the default UI would be great as well. Speaking of those progress bars, any chance at an option to switch between those and the default seek bars? :p

Thanks, and keep up the good work, ne_me_sis :]

Bug:

When selecting multiple files, then right click > Masstagger, It only shows the file that was clicked on, rather than all of the files selected.  Same sort of behavior happens when select many files then Right Click > Properties.

I don't recall this being an issue before... maybe some issues with upgrading to 0.8b8?

it's weird, it works here (btw, you must right click on any of selected items, not unselected one)

I will try it again later just to be sure.

Also I have experienced the bug Silverbolt was talking about...

I wasn't sure what caused it, but for some reason I was getting the wrong file info in the "Properties" menu for a while, although the file info window pane was correct.

Also, if I go to the bottom of my playlist and press the shift key (in preparation to highlight the whole playlist) it jumps to the top of the playlistand I have to scroll back to the bottom again.  Not a crippling bug, but annoying nonetheless.

One more thing, on the latest version (0.1.1 I think), when I double click the edge of a column header, as to auto size the column, the column simply becomes very tiny, rather than matching the width of the widest item in the column.

Also is there a reference, or can you provide one of what hotkeys are enabled/disabled by the preferences dialog.

Additionally would it be possible to allow configuration of foo_tunes while it is not the current UI?

And one more thing... any chance you can upload the new versions to the 3rd party plugins page (http://pelit.koillismaa.fi/plugins/) in addition to simply posting there about updates (as you do now)?

Wow that was a mouthful... Needless to say I love this UI... keep up the good work, and know I will bug test it 24/7 haha.

I just noticed that this thread is subtitled "crash (access violation)."

Maybe someone ought to change that (moderators?), as this has become more of a general foo_tunes discussion, not focused on a crash per se.

I do like this UI very much as well  , thanx a lot ne_me_sis.

Unfortunately I get crashes when I scroll quickly the playlist. The playlist background becomes blue  and then foobar crashes.

Running Win2k,
foo_tunes 0.1.0,
Happens whatever foobar 0.7.x or 0.8bx version I use,
Playlist ~ 5000 tracks.

You selected foo_tunes under "Display" in the preferences and then restarted foobar?

Yes I did.  When I select foo_tunes under Display is show <Empty page>, no options to select.  Then when closed and restarted foodbar displays with no changes.

Can someone please give me foo_tunes 0.1.0? I'm still using foobar2000 0.7.7b and don't want to upgrade to 0.8 until there's a final version.

Thanks.
