What does "Encoder requires accurate length" mean, and what (formats/encoders?) is it useful for?

It was written by Case some time ago:

"It reads the length from source file and uses it in the WAV header that is sent to encoder. If the check box is not ticked maximum length that WAV supports is used. Maximum length is useful because some encoders stop processing after reaching given length and if DSPs are used number of samples going to encoder can change. It's configurable however because for example wavpack.exe deletes encoded file if output length doesn't match with input. Note: this is only needed when processing directly with pipes, temp wav always gets correct header."
