MP1 and Mp2 quality at various bitrates

can somebody tell me the quality Vs bitrate for MP1 and MP2 compared to MP3

MP1 is really obselete and i dont think anyone is using it these days, even the encoder....... the only encoders I know are
TMPGENC's and tompg

MP2 is still used in VCD,
not so well tuned, no proper joint-stereo

mp2 224kbps stereo = LAME mp3 128kbps j-stereo ???????
just a rough guess, as both of them of cuts off at ~16khz

i'v never even heard mp1 before... i guess it's mp2 with less features (no JS at all?  only dual-channel perhaps?)

i've read somewhere that mp1 at 384kbps ~= mp2 at 224 ~= mp3 @160

haven't done a formal test, but you're pretty safe with mp2 at 224 kbps.

There is (was) another mpeg layer I encoder that I know: one inside open cubic player, a MOD player of the MS-DOS days :  [a href="http://www.cubic.org/player/]http://www.cubic.org/player/[/url]

(Mmm.. just tried now and I don't remember how to encode a file...)

All these encode MP1.

there is toolame for mp2 or mp2enc, and both have the psy models 1 and 2 included.

iirc, one of those  2 models cut off at 16kHz even at 224 kbit/s, but not the other.
somewehre at 160-192 kbit/s was the limit, when it is betetr to change from psy 1 to psy 2 or vice versa.
lower bitrates sound better with certain psy model,
the higher bitrates with the other.
made abx tests some years ago for this, you should find them here at HA.

My conclusio was, if mp2 from 128k upward was encoded with the correct psy model, it sounds pretty good. at least for usage in vcd, svcd.
