Cuesheet Question

Ripping a CD to a FLAC image and Cuesheet.  When I load the cuesheet into Foobar2000, all of the artist/album/track information is displayed, but the genre and date information is not.

I noticed when looking at the cuesheet that those entries havd a REM statement.  Is that why it's not displayed?  I'm at work and can't test at the moment.

I didn't see this mentioned in the sticky's or FAQ's, but I may have missed it.

I can use %date%, %genre%, etc. to access these fields (0.9b13 - but ever since I can remember).

I just tested with a cue + wav, but I don't see why it would be different for your FLAC file.

Do those entries have a REM statement in front of them in the cue file, like mine does?

REM just means that this is not a standard tag which is correct for date and genre

0.8.3 can not read date and genre in cue sheets but 0.9 can. you can also try cue_ex but i had various problems with that plugin.

OK, I just tested this again.  I have a FLAC image and CUE file.  I verified that the FLAC image has no tags at all.  If I load that file into Foobar2000, it only displays the filename, no tags.  That is what I would expect.

If I load the cue file into Foobar2000, Foobar2000 will display the artists, the album title, all of the individual track titles.  Looking at the properties of one of the tracks will show the field populated with the correct data.  What is missing is the genre and date information, both of which are present in the cue file.  Foobar2000 is ignoring those fields.

Ahhh, that explains it.  Thanks.  Guess I should have mentioned what version I was using. 

I could actually apply those two tags to the image file, and that would work.  I was wanting to not use any tags at all, and just have the information read from the cue file.

I'm curious...

Since Metaflac strips out the tracknames when embedding the cuesheet, how does it work when you embed the cuesheet with Foobar2000.  I'm not looking for a real technical anwer, just a general overview.  Am I creating a "non-standard" FLAC file, and should I even care if I am?

Embedding with foobar uses a Vorbis comment.  You can set any Vorbis tag to any value - there's nothing inherently special about one called CUESHEET.

However, foobar recognises a CUESHEET tag in various lossless files (Monkey's Audio, WavPack, FLAC, etc.) as do other applications like ACDIR, and even my latest mod of Tag.

As you are not using FLAC's native CUESHEET meta block I guess you can't expect FLAC to acknowledge your Vorbis comment.  However, foobar, ACDIR, etc. does, and you can  always just extract from the CUESHEET tag to a CUE file if an app requires an external file.

So, by using a Vorbis CUESHEET tag, you are simply using FLAC's tagging facility to store your cuesheet, in its totality, in a tag - but luckily some great apps like foobar and ACDIR recognise this tag and can use it like an external cuesheet.

Edit: To actually answer your question () you are not creating a non-standard FLAC file - just a file with an additional Vorbis comment.  This (using a Vorbis comment and not the FLAC meta block) does of course mean though that the cuesheet is not elligable for some nifty inherent cuesheet wizardry, like the --cue switch.
