File Name Art

I want to rename my audio collection, but am not sure what information to include and in what order.

Do you guys have any popular "file name art" schemes?

e.g. artist - album - track - title !!!

Any other better suggestions?

Right! Even if you don't use **** as your 'ripping standard', their filenaming sheme resembles the way I'd sort/store my CDs best.

Artist_year_Album\tracknr_Artist_Title
or
Various_year_Album\tracknr_Artist_Title

Why not dashes?
- Too often they are also part of Artist, Album or Title
- For dashes to look good as separators, they need a space in front and behind. An underscore does the separating well on its own. So that saves some positions to stay under 64 char (for Joliet).

With a large collection you need to categorize it. I also find it useless to repeat information (ie: artist both in directories and filenames). I use:

GENRE\Artist\(Year) Album\Track - Title.Ext

With this I find any kind of tag is unneeded and I can easily find what I want.

Slight variation is with Various Artists for which I use:

GENRE\Various Artists\(Year) Album\Track - Title (Artist).Ext

And in the case of Compilations issued by an important label (eg: Studio One):

GENRE\Label\(Year) Album\Track - Title (Artist).Ext

Albums:
Artist\Album\Track Number - Title.flac

Various Artists:
Various Artists\Album\Track Number - Artist - Title.flac

This is the way I have done it for year!

Artist\Year - Album\Artist - Year - Album - Track - Title

It's overkill, but each track is fully independant

Got the same as u, solaris... works well indeed. I dont want a seperate directory for every album (like in "artist - album/track name.ext"). And I make main categories myself (Metal, Electronic, Oldies etc etc)

Filename:

<TrackNumber> - <TrackArtist> - <TrackTitle>.mp3
or
<MediaNumber>-<TrackNumber> - <TrackArtist> - <TrackTitle>.mp3

Foldername:
always starts with

# <Genre> #\

Album has Artist:
<AlbumArtist>\<Year> - <Album>\

or (if there are to many albums in the folder)

<AlbumArtist>\<Year> - <Album>\# <AlbumType> #\
with <AlbumType> = [Album | Maxi | BestOf | Live]

Various Artists:
<Year> - <Compilation>

or if this is a series

<Compilation>\<Year> - Vol. <VolumeNumber>\

Anybody have any suggestions for classical music?  I can think of three standard situations:

1) clear composer and  clear artist.  (ie. Glenn Gould -  Bach Goldberg Variations).

2) clear artist playing various composers.  (ie. LAGQ - Latin)

3) clear composer with somewhat less clear artist, often the conductor is used.  (ie.  Beethoven 9th Symphony - Karajan)

I'm trying to come up with something that is easily searchable (through a file browser) and does not contain redundant information.  Also it is necessary that some mass tagging program can parse the structure to create tags.  This last part is generally the problem since many albums in my collection don't contain this artist/composer differentiation.

Any ideas?

Artist - Albumtitle/Tracknumber - Artist - Tracktitle
Example:
Metallica - Ride The Lightning/01 - Metallica - Fight Fire With Fire.ogg

music/genre/artist/album/artist - album - tracknumber - title.ogg

various artists:

music/genre/album/artist - album (of which this track is) - title

Waw!!!

I wasn't expecting so many different variations!

Anyway, what do I write in the Artist section?

The person who sang the song, or the person who wrote the song if different?

I'd go for the singer

As for classical (and general files) I try to sort them for a file-browser in order of importance...

artist\collection title - composer (orchestra)\01 - name

or for other music :

genre\artist\year - album\01 - title
with genre being my choice of 5 broad groups

I like this a lot:

Artist / Year - Album (profile) / TrackNumber - SongTitle.mpc

This way, when you are viewing them in a file browser, the albums are in the order they were released, and the songs are in the order they are on the CD.
